Rice junior Krista Noack will spend five weeks this summer hiking El Camino de las Estrellas, "The Way of the Stars," a religious pilgrimage route in northern Spain, as part of her Goliard Travel Scholarship. The Goliard funds travel that allows a student to expand his or her horizons and augment his or her education in any field of study or interest. Noack, a double major in linguistics and Spanish, selected the pilgrimage trail for its historical and religious significance. For more than 1,000 years Christians have traveled this trail, which ends in the city of Santiago de Compostela. Each day a mass is held in the city for the most recently arrived pilgrims. Noack heard about El Camino de las Estrellas in a linguistics class at Rice. "So many people have traveled this road over the centuries, people who have left behind the day-to-day existence to discover a new place. It will be a great experience to find out a lot about the pilgrimages and about myself," she said.
